How to characterize the temporal patterning of neural activity during behavior is a problem of broad interest in systems neuroscience. I will discuss two statistical issues of central importance to this line of work: 1) What statistical quantities are suitable for detecting correlations in neural data during behavior and 2) What classes of stochastic process models explain the observations. Illustrations on sample experimental data from the behaving monkey will be presented.
